What to see in Cantiano
L'orologio pubblico (The Town Clock)
The complicated mechanism of the Town Clock can be admired beneath the Belfry. For the citizens of Cantiano, having an accurate clock must have been a question of reputation. Since ancient times, Cantiano, as "loco de passa dove per diversi lochi d'Italia passano foresti et altri gran signori et venal homini" had had this useful public instrument and were not please that it should not chime due to the suspension of payments by the Ducal Chamber to its tuner, for which there were pressing requests for the Duke’s intervention. However, the clock’s silence was not due to the lack of a tuner, but to years of wear. In 1541, Guidobaldo shouldered the expense and commissioned M. Tubaldo “de li Orioli” from Fabriano to construct a new clock and the iron framework to support the bell.
